List of Courses (autumn 2020)

CS-A1110 Ohjelmointi 1

Kurssilla opetetaan ohjelmoinnin perusteita Scala-ohjelmointikielen avulla. Kurssi alkaa heti 1. opetusjakson alussa ja jatkuu joulukuun alkupuolelle saakka.

Tuntiassarin työhön kuuluu harjoitustilaisuuksien vetämistä tietokoneluokissa, harjoitustehtävien arvostelua, opiskelijoiden neuvomista, etenemisen seurantaa ja palautteen antamista, yms. Tyypillisellä viikolla syksyn aikana kukin assari vetää kaksi kaksituntista harjoitusryhmää ja käyttää pari tuntia muihin tehtäviin. Osa assistenteista keskittyy neuvomiseen verkon keskustelupalstalla luokkahuoneen sijaan.

Kurssin edellinen toteutus: https://plus.cs.aalto.fi/o1/2019/

This course, O1, teaches the basics of programming using the Scala programming language. It runs for the entire fall semester.

The main duties of O1’s teaching assistants (TAs) are to advise students at the computer labs, assess some programming assignments, keep an eye on students’ progress, and provide feedback. In a typical week, a TA will supervise a couple of two-hour lab sessions and spend another two hours on other duties.

To apply, you must be a student at Aalto and you should have studied the basics of programming successfully. You should either know the basics of the Scala language already or be prepared to study them before next fall. We appreciate additional programming experience, good spoken and written communication skills, successful studies in general, teaching experience, and language skills.

CS-A1111 Ohjelmoinnin peruskurssi Y1

Kurssilla opetetaan ohjelmoinnin perusteet Python-kielen avulla.

Kurssiapulaisen tehtäviin kuuluu kahden viikoittaisen harjoitusryhmän pitäminen ajalla 10.9.-25.11.2020 (ei kuitenkaan tenttiviikolla), opiskelijoiden neuvomista kurssin keskusteluryhmässä sovituilla  viikoilla, joidenkin palautettujen harjoitustehtävien tarkistaminen käsin (pääosa tehtävistä tarkistetaan automaattisesti) sekä muita vastaavia tehtäviä. Yhden assistentin kokonaistyöaika (joka sisältää myös esimerkiksi opetukseen valmistautumiseen käytetyn ajan) on noin 100 tuntia koko kurssin aikana. Halutessaan kurssiapulainen voi ottaa lisätehtäviä (esimerkiksi ylimääräisten harjoituskertojen pitäminen), joista maksetaan erikseen. Lisätehtäviä on tarjolla rajoitetusti.

Myös hakijat, jotka eivät vielä osaa Pythonia, mutta osaavat muuten ohjelmoida esim. Scala-kielellä, otetaan paikkoja täytettäessä huomioon, jos he sitoutuvat opettelemaan Pythonin ennen kurssin alkua (esim. kesäkurssilla). Koska kurssin opetuskieli on suomi, palkattavilta kurssiapulaisilta edellytetään hyvää suomen kielen taitoa.

Lisätietoja kurssiapulaisen tehtävistä ja palkkauksesta antaa Kerttu Pollari-Malmi, (etunimi.sukunimi@aalto.fi)

CS-A1113 Basics of programming Y1

The course teaches the basics of programming using Python.

The course assistant's duties include conducting two weekly exercise groups (not during the exam week), advising students on the agreed weeks in the course discussion group, manually checking some of the returned exercise assignments (most of the assignments are automatically checked). The total working time of one assistant (including, for example, preparation time for teaching) is approximately 100 hours throughout the course. If desired, the course assistant can take on additional tasks (for example, holding extra training sessions), which are paid for separately. Additional tasks are limited.

Applicants who do not yet know Python, but who are otherwise able to program in Scala, for example, will be considered for placement if they undertake to study Python before the course begins (eg summer course). As the language of instruction of the course is English, a good knowledge of English is required for the course assistants hired.

For more information on the course assistant's duties and salary, please contact Barbara Keller, (firstname.lastname@aalto.fi)

CS-A1140 Data Structures and Algorithms

The course "CS-A1140 Data Structures and Algorithms" is searching for multiple TAs for the periods I and II. In addition to getting money and a line in your CV, this is an excellent possibility to deepen your own understanding of the course topics (explaining them to somebody else requires that you understand them even better than when passing the course).
Your main task will be to instruct students in their programming assignments during the exercise sessions. Each TA will have 2 x 2h exercise sessions each week. You are also expected to allocate 2h/week to individual preparation and 1h/week to participating the weekly course personnel meeting where we go through the assignments of each round. Thus the minimum total workload for the Autumn semester is 11 weeks x 7h/week = 77h.
If you willing to work more, extra hours can be negotiated and allocated, for instance, to giving online instruction and feedback.
