Welcome to study at Aalto University! 

History

Helsinki University of Technology (TKK), the Helsinki School of Economics (HSE), and the University of Art and Design Helsinki (UIAH) merged into Aalto University on 1 January 2010. The new schools were named the Aalto University School of Science and Technology, the Aalto University School of Economics, and the Aalto University School of Art and Design.

As of 1 January 2011, the Aalto University School of Science and Technology has been divided into four schools: the Aalto University School of Chemical Engineering, the Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering, the Aalto University School of Engineering and the Aalto University School of Science.   

All on-going agreements concerning international cooperation of Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) are automatically transferred to the new Aalto University Schools in the fields of Science and Technology, and this will not endanger or change the implementation of the agreements.

Education

Aalto University is the leading Finnish university of its kind in the fields of Science and Technology. It provides education for more than 20 000 students and carries out research in most areas of technology and architecture. Aalto University is committed to the provision of high-quality education. It aims to equip the students with a firm foundation of knowledge needed in various fields of technology to enable their continuous professional development and ensure that they meet the requirements of an increasingly international operating environment.

As an exchange student you will become part of the vibrant university community in Otaniemi campus with each year approximately 1400 new students entering the schools to pursue degree studies. In addition, there are more than 200 international students admitted each year to master's degree programmes taught in English. More than 300 international visiting students such as exchange students study in the Otaniemi campus each year. Student life at Aalto University is very active and most students are members of the Student Union AYY. Technology students, called teekkari, are famous for their cheerful events and pranks.

Campus

Otaniemi campus, designed by Alvar Aalto, is located in Espoo, by a gulf of sea. This part of Espoo constitutes a significant concentration of university education, research centres as well as head quarters of the most well-known Finnish companies such as Nokia, Kone and Neste Oil. In addition to that, Otaniemi campus is just a 15 minute bus ride from Helsinki centre, the lively capital of Finland. The Helsinki region attracts international students with high level of education, interesting Scandinavian identity with a mixture of east and west, hundreds of cultural events, friendly people and the beauty of the northern nature.
