General information on graduation
The Dean awards degrees approximately once a month with the exception of July. The graduation date on the diploma is the date when the Dean awards the degree.
Awarding the degree must be requested electronically through the eAge system at the latest three weeks before the Dean awards the degree. The application send via e Age will be directed to the student services of the student’s master’s programme. It is possible to apply for the degree before the master’s thesis has been approved.
Students are notified both by email and through eAge when the degree has been awarded.
Graduating with honours
Students who, in the course of their studies towards the master’s degree, have shown excellent knowledge of the field as well as exceptional maturity and sense of judgment in the thesis may have this recognised in their degree certificate with the phrase 'Pass with Honours'. A degree may be awarded with honours if the weighted average grade of the courses included in the degree (excluding the thesis) and the grade for the master’s thesis both are at least 4.0. Courses graded with pass/fail are not taken in to account when calculating the average grade.
Receiving the diploma
The master’s degree diplomas are conferred in a ceremony, which are usually held twice per semester.
Students who are unable to attend the ceremony can collect their diplomas from the student services of their master’s programme/major (contact information) according to the schedule below. Students will be requested to prove their identity.
The diploma can also be sent by registered mail on request.
The email with information on awarding the degree contains also a link to the page where students can enroll to the ceremony or authorize sending the diploma by post.
Students can authorize another person to collect their diploma or allow the student services to send the diploma to someone else. The power of attorney is to be used for this purpose.
Graduation schedule in the academic year 2017
Deadlines for applying for degree certificate is three weeks prior to the Approval of master's degree dates. Those completing their master’s degree can apply for degree certificate by the deadline of The Degree Programme Committee, together with the application for approval and grading of the thesis.
The ceremony includes speeches and music and it lasts for about two hours. Refreshments are available after the ceremony. The graduates may not invite more than three guests.

Reimbursement of student union membership fee
If you will earn your degree at the start of the term, you may apply to the student union for a reimbursement of your membership fee. Those who graduate during autumn term may apply for reimbursement of the membership fee of the following term (spring). You may apply for reimbursement of the fee for autumn term by the end of September at the latest, and the fee for spring term by the end of January at the latest. If you apply for reimbursement, you have to return the sticker of your student card before the reimbursement may be made. If you do not apply for reimbursement, you are entitled to student benefits for as long as your sticker is valid.
If your study right has ended, for example, with graduation, you are unfortunately unable to continue using the digital student card. Frank App verifies student status in real time from a system where information comes directly from universities or student unions. However, you can use your plastic student card or a student certificate as requested by the school until the end of the membership period.

Joining the Alumni network
You are able to join Aalto University´s alumni network right after your graduation. If you have accepted the alumni network membership in WebOodi (WebOodi>User Information>Conditions for giving out Student Information) you will be automatically part of Alumni network but you need to update your email information and activate your alumni profile in alumninet.aalto.fi.
Alumnus is a former student of the University and all the Graduates from the Aalto University are welcome to join Alumni network. For further information please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
Validity of Aalto email and user account
Your Aalto email and user account are valid for four months after the date of graduation. Remember to transfer any important messages from your Aalto email and any important files you may have saved in the Aalto domain.
