What is ‘accreditation of learning demonstrated in some other manner’?
Aalto University degree students may transfer to their degrees credits for learning that was gained outside formal education, provided it meets the learning outcomes of the degree and programme pursued. This is referred to as ‘accreditation of learning demonstrated in some other manner’.
Learning that may be accredited towards a degree may be gained outside formal education, for instance, through independent study, positions of responsibility, hobbies or work. It should be noted that, when assessing prior learning, the focus is on the knowledge and skills gained rather than the experience itself.
Each Aalto University course has a set of intended learning outcomes defined in the course description. (https://mycourses.aalto.fi/). If the learning you have gained through work or independent study is equivalent to the learning outcomes of an Aalto course, you can claim credits for the course.
Credits for work experience and positions of responsibility
If you have work experience that is relevant to your degree, you can apply for its inclusion in your degree. You should contact your degree programme for details.
If you have done voluntary work or held positions of responsibility in the Aalto community, you can earn credits for them by taking a course set up for this purpose:
- TU-CV Giving back to the Community
Substituting prior learning for an Aalto course
When you wish to substitute prior learning for an Aalto course, the content of your prior learning will be compared against the learning outcomes of the Aalto course and the course teacher-in-charge may require you to provide additional evidence of your learning. The additional evidence may take the form of an oral or written examination, an essay, a portfolio or other assignment.
Other accreditation of prior learning demonstrated in some other manner
If you have prior learning that is relevant to your degree, but does not correspond to any courses offered at Aalto, the learning may be accredited towards your degree at the discretion of the director of the degree programme. To apply for accreditation in such cases, you should first familiarise yourself with the learning outcomes of your degree on Into and think about how your prior learning may be linked to your degree and your personal study plan. Write an application where you give justifications for why your prior learning should be accredited towards your degree and supplement the application with your study plan and any other pertinent documents (portfolio, certificate of employment, certificate of attendance in training, etc.). Use online application form: https://sharepoint.aalto.fi/sites/Workflow/Students/Lists/Credit%20transfer/NewForm.aspx
The decision on the accreditation of prior learning demonstrated in some other manner, and on any additional assignments required for it, is made by the director of degree programme.
