We are here for you in any matters regarding your doctoral studies and your doctoral study right at Aalto University.

Doctoral studies, including questions like:

  • What kind of courses and attainments are ok for my doctoral degree?
  • How to get credits from summer schools, workshops, conferences?
  • How to take courses from other universities?
  • Can I change courses in my study plan?
  • How to apply for incentive scholarships? Am I eligible for the scholarship?
  • Things are not working as they should with my supervising professor and/or thesis advisor, what should I do?
  • What are the general requirements for dissertations at Aalto?
  • I’m about to finish my licentiate thesis or dissertation, what do I need to do next?

Doctoral study right, including questions like:

  • I cannot enroll to courses, what to do?
  • I forgot to enroll for the academic year, what to do?
  • I want to change my students status from full-time to part-time or vice versa
  • I have studied already four years as a full-time student, what happens now? (please remember that questions regarding your work contract are handled by the HR staff at your department)

Dissertation awards and Get-together for doctoral students at the School of Science 20 March 2019

Welcome to the awarding event of doctoral dissertations and to the annual Get-together for doctoral students at the School of Science! The theme of the Get-together is: Careers after graduation.

Come and find out who will receive the doctoral dissertation awards of year 2018. Enjoy breakfast brunch together with other doctoral students and listen to different stories from doctors graduated from the School of Science.

Breakfast brunch is served from 8.00 onwards and the programme starts at 8.30. Please note that the doors will be opened at 8.00. Programme is available at:

The event is aimed at doctoral students who are planning to start their pre-examination in the near future. The event is organized twice a year, in spring and in late autumn. Lecture for doctoral students: Writing the compiling part of an article dissertation 15 May 2019

Time: Wednesday 15 May 2019 at 12.15 - 16.00

Lecturer: Dr. Pekka Belt

The lecture provides doctoral students with an understanding of writing an article dissertation effectively once the related articles have been written. The lecture will help students in understanding the role of the separate articles and the dissertation as a whole. After the lecture, students will know what is required from an article dissertation, and how to reach the goal as efficiently as possible while maintaining high standards. Students will have a good perception of dissertation requirements and structure. More information available here.

Lecture for doctoral students: Writing scientific journal articles 16 May 2019

Time: Thursday 16 May 2019 at 8.15 - 12.00

The lecture provides young researchers and doctoral students with understanding of writing scientific journal articles. The lecture will motivate students to start writing sooner. After the lecture, the student will understand what is required from a scientific article and what the related publishing processes entail. The student will know how to approach and write a scientific journal article effectively. More information available here.

Speech Clinic for doctoral students

Speech Clinic is ideal for doctoral students wanting feedback and support when preparing for conferences and other important public speaking engagements. You´ll get support and constructive feedback from Language Centre´s communication experts. Speech Clinic is offered in English and in Finnish.

PoDoCo (PostDocs in Companies) Spring 2019 application round 1 March – 15 April 2019

PoDoCo matches newly graduated doctors with companies and financially supports the collaboration projects between doctors and companies. PoDoCo program offers research grants of 6-12 months to investigate new innovative ideas boosting the strategic renewal of Finnish companies. PoDoCo program is aimed for newly graduated doctors who wish to work in companies. All young doctors who have recently completed or will soon complete their doctorate degree are welcome to join the PoDoCo Program.

Official electronic transcripts from study register

You can order an official digitally signed transcript of records from WebOodi if you are a student at Aalto. The electronic transcript of records is a PDF document equipped with a digital signature to confirm its authenticity and integrity. The electronic transcript is a valid alternative in all situations where signed and stamped paper transcripts are used. Whatever the transaction, if the party concerned does not accept your digitally signed document, you may of course request a signed and stamped paper transcript from the Student Services of the Doctoral Programme.

Aalto University incentive scholarships for doctoral students

Remember, that Aalto University awards incentive scholarships to doctoral students. The scholarships are awarded to students who have met the conditions for receiving a scholarship beginning from 1 January 2014. The scholarship system will be continued until the end of year 2021 according to the current principles. The application has to be submitted within six months of the fulfillment of the scholarship criteria. The scholarships are not awarded backdated.

  • 500 euro scholarship for the first refereed article
  • 500 euro scholarship for completing theoretical studies
  • 2,000 euro scholarship for completing the doctoral degree
