Bachelor's degree students

Exemption from language and communication studies

In addition to foreign language studies, as part of his/her Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business Administration degree the student must complete the obligatory studies in national languages, Finnish and Swedish. The obligatory national languages studies consist of the following studies:

  • 71A00200 Yritysviestinnän perusteet, 6 cr
  • 72A00100 Ruotsinkielinen yritysviestintä 1, 3 cr.

The vice dean can decide to partly exempt the student from these obligatory national languages studies (Degree Regulations 2013, 22 §). In lieu of these studies, the student has to complete other language studies (the studies have to be at least B1-level studies).

Exemption from taking the maturity tests in Finnish or in Swedish

Maturity test is a written test that is completed after the submitting the thesis. In the maturity test the student is expected to demonstrate that (s)he masters both the subject of the thesis and Finnish or Swedish language.

If you have received your schooling in other than in Finnish or Swedish language, it is possible for you to apply for taking the maturity test in some other language – normally in English (Degree Regulations 2013, 24 §). This sort of a maturity test is only for demonstrating your familiarity with your thesis’s subject, not for testing your linguistic skills.

NB. The maturity test must always be written in Finnish or in Swedish, unless the student has received an exemption from it. This applies, even if the thesis has been written in English.

Application and required enclosures

To receive the language exemption and the exemption from taking the maturity test in Finnish or in Swedish, the student has to apply for them from the vice dean responsible for the tuition.

Please find the application here        (.pdf). You can apply for both exemptions with the same application.

Please attach to your application the following enclosures:

Students that have been exempted at Mikkeli

If you have been a degree student at the Mikkeli unit and been granted a language exemption there, you do not have to apply for the exemption again when becoming a degree student in Helsinki. You do not have to have to attach a copy of that exemption to your diploma order form, either. Please just mark clearly in your diploma order form that you have received an exemption at the Mikkeli unit, we can then check this from our folders.
