Below we have compiled some of the most urgent matters to consider as a new Master's student at Aalto University School of Business. For a more thorough outlook on matters related to your Master's studies, please refer to the Survival Guide for new Master's students.

Orientation to studies

We welcome our new Master's students with orientation that begins 4 September 2017. The orientation schedule will be updated during the summer.

In addition to the orientation days, the Master’s programmes arrange a welcoming event to their new Master’s students. The Study Coordinators inform their students of the date and venue for the event closer to the start of the studies.

Accepting the admission offer

New students must accept their study place by 31 May 2017 (3:00 pm Finnish time) or the study place will be cancelled. Please follow the instructions sent to you in the admission materials. If you have any questions, please contact us at study-biz@aalto.fi.

Applicants with an incomplete degree

If you had an incomplete degree at the time of applying, please see the instructions below.

If you applied with an incomplete degree, the degree must be completed by 31 July 2017. Please submit certified copies of the diploma (and its authorised translation, if applicable) and the final transcript of records to the School of Business as soon as possible, at the latest by 7 August 2017 (3:00 pm, GMT +3). If you are not able to graduate or the required documents are not received by the deadline, the conditionally granted study place will be cancelled.

Please read the attesting instructions carefully as unattested plain copies of the original documents are not accepted:

  • If the degree is awarded by a higher education institution in Finland, the copy of the degree certificate must be certified either by the issuing institution or by two unbiased signatories.
  • If the degree is awarded by a higher education institution outside Finland, the copy of the degree certificate (and its authorised translation, if applicable) must be certified by the issuing institution or by a notary public. Note also the country-specific documentation requirements

Plain copies are not accepted and the documents can't be sent by email. Please mark your name and your Master’s programme to the envelope and send the certified copies to the School of Business address:

Enrolment for new students

New students enroll at the university within 2 May-15 August 2017. The obligatory Aalto University Student Union (AYY) membership fee 116 € is paid when registering as attending. There are two ways to enroll:

 With Finnish online banking ID by 31 July

If you have Finnish online banking ID, you can enroll online at Studyinfo.fi as of 2 May 2017. Enrolling online is possible until 31 July 2017, after that you need to follow the instructions given below for students who do not have Finnish netbank ID. Log into Studyinfo.fi and go to My Studyinfo > My applications. The Student Union membership fee is paid when enrolling as attending.

 Without Finnish online banking ID or after 31 July

If you are unable to enroll online, you need to pay the Aalto University Student Union (AYY) membership fee as a bank transfer and submit a receipt of the paid membership fee to the Learning Services of Aalto University School of Business by email (receipt in PDF format) to: study-biz@aalto.fi. The receipt of the paid fee has to include your name as the payer or in the information field and the filing code of the payment. A receipt without your name or filing code is not accepted.

If you pay the fee from abroad, you need to take into account the international bank transfer costs of both the sending and the receiving banks to make sure that you pay the exact sum 116 € to AYY.

In case you can't pay the fee as a bank transfer, it is possible to pay the fee at the AYY Student Union office (address: Otakaari 11, 02150 Espoo). Cashier services are open Monday to Friday 12–14 (2nd floor).

Please note that you can't use any Aalto services, receive a student number or register for courses before you are enrolled as attending.


IT accounts and student numbers

Below you can find instructions on how to activate your Aalto IT account and receive your student number in August.

 Click here if you have Finnish online banking ID

Students who are enrolled as attending and have Finnish online banking ID can activate their IT accounts at https://password.aalto.fi from 3 August 2017 onwards. After registering with the online banking ID, you can see your student number, user account and the first password (which needs to be changed). Also, students who have forgot their password can set a new password in the service.

Students who do not have Finnish online banking ID can contact study-biz@aalto.fi from 3 August 2017 onwards after having enrolled as attending and request for the IT account and student number.


Certificate of student status

If you need a certificate of student status (certificate of attendance / enrolment), you can visit the Learning Services HelpDesk during opening hours after you have enrolled as attending from 3 August 2017 onwards and request for the certificate. If you have any questions, please contact study-biz@aalto.fi.

Aalto University Student Union, AYY

All Aalto University students undertaking Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees are members of AYY. AYY is a service and advocacy organization of the students of Aalto University.

All degree students, who are members of the student union, are entitled to apply for a student card. The first year students can apply for the student card once they have paid the student union fee, their study right is valid (in August) and when they have their student number. The card is valid only when you have paid the student union membership fee and received a sticker based on the payment.

After having paid the student union fee, AYY members are entitled to various benefits and services. These include for example Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS), meal subsidy in student restaurants, discounts on internal and regional tickets, bus tickets when you travel min. 80 km as well as train tickets. Additionally AYY members have the right to apply for AYY housing.

Association of Aalto University Business Students, KY

Joining the Association of Aalto University Business Students, KY is voluntary and free of charge. KY offers its members services and benefits, moreover it is a community where you can network with other students at the School of Business. By becoming a member you get access to events organized by KY, enjoy the member benefits negotiated with partner companies and also become a student member of The Finnish Association of Business School Graduates. You can join at http://kyweb.fi/join after you have received your student number in August.

Student discount on HSL travel card

Full-time students living in the Helsinki Region Transport System (HSL) area can get a student discount travel card under certain conditions. More information is on the HSL website.

For HSL student discount you need either a valid student card OR discount ticket application form with a university stamp on it. If you don't have a student card yet, you can fill in and print out the discount ticket application form on the above HSL website and take it to the Learning Services helpdesk to be stamped during the opening hours after you have enrolled as attending from 3 August 2017 onwards. 

The travel card is purchased at a HSL service point.

Finnish personal identity code for foreign citizens

For a foreign citizen moving to Finland from abroad, a personal identity code is issued when he or she has been registered in the Population Information System. The request for personal identity code may also be filed together with an application for a residence permit, a residence card or the residence registration for EU citizens. These applications are received by Finnish missions abroad or the Finnish Immigration Service in Finland.

The personal identity code is used for identification purposes, for example in banks, hospitals, registering for classes outside the university, and the registers of different authorities. If you didn't have a personal ID code already at the time of applying to the university, it is important that you give your personal identity code to the Learning Services to be registered into the study register as soon as you receive your ID code. The personal identity code will show on your transcript of records and degree certificate. Please send a copy of any official document that includes your Finnish ID number to the Learning Services by email: study-biz@aalto.fi and request registering your personal identity code to the study register. Please include your student number in the message (if available).

Planning your studies

Personal study plan and course registration can be done after your study right is valid in August and after having enrolled as attending. You will receive further instructions from your study coordinator by email in August. The online Study Guide for the academic year 2017-2018 will be published on Into page of your study programme on page Curriculum 2017-2018.

Personal study plan

Planning of studies is an integral and necessary part of university studies. The personal study plan (PSP) is first and foremost a tool for the students. Drafting your personal study plan helps you plan your studies and get a better overview what your degree consists of. When you have thought of your goals, chosen the study modules accordingly and drafted a realistic and target-oriented schedule for completing these studies, you have a map for making your dreams come true.

Your study coordinator will send you a pre-assignment related to your PSP planning by email during August. The PSP is done electronically by using the eHOPS tool of WebOodi. Instructions can be found in Into page Planning your studies.

Course registration

Registration for all courses is done in WebOodi. Course registration usually starts 28 days before the teaching period begins, and ends 7 days before the teaching period begins.
