Until now, students have needed to write a separate maturity essay after submitting their master’s thesis for evaluation.

As of 1 Aug, 2019, the abstract of the thesis acts as the maturity essay and, therefore, a separate session for writing the maturity essay is no longer needed. After your thesis has been approved, the maturity essay is interpreted to be also accepted.

The abstract must be submitted in the language of the thesis. In addition, at least one translation of it must be provided:

  • If the thesis language is Finnish or Swedish, the translation must be provided in English and, optionally, also in the second national language.
  • If the language of the thesis is English, the translation must be provided in the student’s language of education (koulusivistyskieli) and, if the student so wishes, in the second national language.
  • If the language of the thesis is not Finnish, Swedish or English, the title of the thesis and the abstract must be submitted in the language of the thesis, in English, in the student’s language of education and, optionally, in the second national language.
