Aalto University will adopt a new practice in marking the student’s language of study attainments as of 1 August 2018.
The language of study attainments of the student, i.e. the language that the student has used for the individually evaluated items of the course, will be recorded for each course starting in the academic year 2018–19 or later. For studies that have started before that, the language of study attainments is usually same as the course language of instruction. As of 1 August 2018, the student’s language of study attainments will be printed on the transcript of records for any course taken on or after 1 August 2018. Students who wish to get a transcript of records without the language of study attainments marked on it can get one from Starting Point or from the student service desk of their school. The language of study attainments will also be printed on the transcript of records appended to degree certificates upon the student’s request, but only for students graduating on or after 1 August 2020.
What determines the language of study attainments?
As a rule, the language of study attainments is the same as the language of instruction of the course. On courses in the fields of technology and art and design taught in either Finnish or Swedish, students may choose to complete their study attainments also in the other national language of Finland. (This option is not available in the field of business.) When the language of instruction is English, students have a right to complete their study attainments in either Finnish or Swedish (in the field of business only in Finnish), provided this option has been expressly stated in the course description.
Only one language of study attainments is marked on the transcript for each course. If the course consists of several components completed in different languages, the student’s language of study attainments is the language in which the most extensive part of the study attainment in terms of workload was completed.
For transfer credits, the language of study attainments is decided based on the documentation provided by the student.
Check your transcript of records and request any corrections immediately
Once you have completed a course, check your transcript of records to see that, along with the other details, the language of study attainments has been marked correctly in case of courses completed on or after 1 August 2018. If it has not, ask the teacher to correct it as soon as possible. Errors in the data stored in the student information system may be corrected for at least six months as of the approval of the study attainment, or for as long as the examination responses and other items used in the course evaluation are available. You should also note that the notifications of study attainment evaluation, submitted by the teachers for entry into the student information system are only retained for a limited time.
